These days, aligners are widely preferred as a popular choice for orthodontic treatment. Clear aligner are designed to realign teeth within the dental arch, offering an alternative to traditional braces. Crafted from safe, transparent plastic, aligners can be easily inserted and removed by the patient. Aligners were initially used to correct mild tooth misalignments, but over time, current technology allows aligners to be used to treat more complex cases. Aesthetic aspect from clear aligner is the main reason most patients choose this treatment.

Case Selection for Aligner
Malocclusion refers to deviations in tooth positioning withing the dental arch. Clear aligners offer a solution for correcting various malocclusion issues like spacing, crowding, overbite, crossbite, and openbite. It’s advisable to commence aligner treatment once all permanent teeth have erupted to optimize tooth adjustment. However, in severe instances of malocclusion, particularly those involving skeletal abnormalities in jaw development, aligners may not be suitable. Cases with extensive tooth loss also are not ideal candidates for aligner therapy. Therefore, it’s crucial for patients to do consultation with their dentist for proper assessment and selection of the aligner treatment.

Before treatment
-
During the initial appointment, the patient can discuss their concerns with the dentist. The dentist will do thorough examination of the patient’s teeth and X-rays will be conducted. The dentist also need to take pictures of the teeth, and make a dental impression either manually or digitally using digital dental scan. The dentist will transmit the patient’s dental record to the aligner team affiliated with the chosen brand, to develop an appropriate treatment plan. Usually patients need to wait 1-2 weeks for the completion of the treatment plan, though the timeframe may vary depending on individual cases.
- On the second appointment, the dentist will explain the treatment plan that will be carried out on the patient’s teeth, such as illustrations before and after using aligners, how long the treatment will take, and other things related to the patient’s condition. If the patient agrees to receive treatment, the dentist will inform the aligner team to send the patient’s clear aligners to the clinic.
